Community Feedback regarding an important program provided by FGUS

I just wanted to thank all who were involved in the terrific phone messages and email messages that let us know about the school closures.  We were out of power, but were able to retrieve messages on email, and just wanted to thank GUSD for using many means to inform us.  Job well done!

Ms. DeSantis,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. The Connect-Ed, all-call system is a great resource and is provided by the Foundation for Glendora Unified Schools (FGUS). It has some excellent capabilities and we are thankful to have it.

As always, during difficulties such as this it takes a team effort and was successful because of the flexibility and support of so many teachers, support staff, principals, district staff, parents and students. Thanks for writing!

Robert Voors, Ed.D

Goddard Principal Brack Jacobsen mentioned FGUS in his December message to parents in the Goddard Gazette

From the November/December issue of the Goddard Gazette:

Dear Goddard Families,

Our school year is in full swing!

Your students are hard at work, both in and out of the classroom. I am amazed and encouraged to see that about 40 percent of the student population is active after school at Goddard. Students are attending Homework Club, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Science Classes, AVID tutoring, Intramurals, Allegro choreography, and a variety of other clubs and tutoring sessions. I appreciate our students’ focus and drive as they produce their best efforts on campus.

We recently celebrated the modernization of Goddard Middle School with our Rededication and ribbon cutting ceremony on Sep. 30. In addition to our ENTIRE student body, this event was attended by our superintendent, school board, city council members, representatives of the assembly and senate, as well as former Goddard staff. As principal, it is certainly a proud moment for this wonderful school, but this event was undoubtedly highlighted by our amazing students. They were so respectful, attentive, and energetic … in a good way. I received compliments from every dignitary in attendance with regard to how great our students were. I could not have been prouder of our Goddard Titans!

Special thanks to the Foundation for Glendora Unified Schools for allowing us to continue to offer our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) courses and the new technology on campus. Without this support, we would not have been able to offer the same programs as we have had in the past. Thank you to all of our Goddard families who have supported the Foundation!

We have arrived upon another very busy time of year! Thanksgiving break is just around the corner, Nov. 22 through 26, allowing us all to spend some time with friends and family. Looking toward December, we will celebrate the holidays with our music concerts and performances, certainly the most wonderful time of the year. I join you in looking forward to what the New Year will bring!

Sincerely,

Brock Jacobsen
Principal

Feedback from Parent and PTA Member Sylvia Garcia

I have four children, all of who are or  have been students in the Glendora Unified School District. FGUS has provided financial help directly to La Fetra Elementary, which has allowed the music program to be offered to the fourth and fifth grade students, has paid for library hours to be restored for at least one school year and for the 2011-2012 school year has purchased “Hello Leo” books for all incoming kindergarten students and currently is talking with Principal Moran to see what other items it can help with this year.  I know that the foundation has made a difference in the lives of many students from elementary to high school and without the efforts of this organization, the glendora unified school district would be further affected by all the state budget cuts directed at public school funding.

Feedback frm Glendora High School Counselor Michelle Ashley

GHS was proud to roll out Naviance in the Fall of 2011 thanks to the financial support of our school Foundation (FGUS).  Naviance is a comprehensive online program which promotes college and career readiness by providing each student with access to a variety of planning tools.  Through the use of Naviance, students, with their own unique accounts, are able to focus on three key areas: career planning, course planning, and college planning.

Recent feedback from the Glendora Chief of Police Rob Castro

The Glendora Police Department has formed several partnerships with the Glendora Unified School District over the past several years to improve the safety of the youth in Glendora.  Through the support of FGUS, we have continued to assign a School Resource Officer (SRO) full-time at Glendora High School, who also provides assistance at all other GUSD campuses.

The presence of the SRO provides immediate security and interaction with the students and faculty to resolve safety issues on and off campus.

Many cities have eliminated their SRO programs due to budget reductions, but due to the partnership between the Glendora Police Department, Glendora Unified School District, and FGUS, our program remains in place.

FGUS Community Spotlight

My daughter and I are grateful to FGUS for rescuing the music program in our elementary schools. This program is not only enjoyable for students; it brings the arts into their lives through teaching them about various forms of music. I hope our community gives generously to the Foundation so valuable programs like this can continue to enhance our children's educational experience. Margerie C.
